After a season with Falcon Simracing, Jan Wiegels returns to Horizon Motorsport and once again takes over the role of team principal — a decision that was made internally at very short notice. At the same time, Fabian Szyrzik is making his comeback after a break and will race for Horizon BHR in 2026. In this interview, both talk about the background, expectations, and what they hope to achieve this season.

Hello Jan, After a season at Falcon, you’re returning to your former team Horizon Motorsport — and taking over the team principal role again. Internally, it was already known that this decision only came together very late. Can you tell us how it happened?

Jan Wiegels:

"It actually came together quite spontaneously. Fabian messaged me and asked if I was still looking for a teammate. At first I said: not really.

But then it fairly quickly occurred to both of us that we had already done the 24-hour race together. That worked well back then — we got along well both personally and competitively — and that put the idea on the table, at least in a rough form.

We stayed in contact, talked it through further and thought it over a bit. At some point we said to ourselves: actually, this is a really good idea — so let’s do it.

Especially because Fabian is simply very strong on track — you could already see that when he raced two years ago. On top of that, we get along very well as people and he brings an enormous amount of know-how. In particular when it comes to infrastructure he’s extremely well set up, and that helps me a lot personally, because that was one of my biggest weak points.

In the end it really just came down to the question: why not?"

When you say “why not?”: What’s your realistic target for 2026 — a building year, or straight into the fight for podiums/top positions?

Jan Wiegels:

"Our aim is definitely to be right at the front. Especially because Fabi brings that know-how and is top-class as a driver, I think we can absolutely be top 3 — maybe even better. But I have to add that right now, of course, it’s not yet clear how other teams will perform over the season. I also have a gut feeling that besides Ottimale and Razor, there could be another, still unknown rival joining the mix. That makes any prediction a bit difficult."

To wrap up: Finish the sentence — Our 2026 season is a success if we …

Jan Wiegels:

"Win the team title. Short and simple."

With Wiegels back at the helm, one name in particular is closely tied to Horizon’s new chapter: Fabian Szyrzik. His comeback surprised many — and we spoke with him about exactly that.

Hi Fabian! Welcome back! Your comeback came as a surprise to many — what made you decide to return this season?

Fabian Szyrzik: "Hi! The first thought of racing again came when I saw the car online. I like this F1 generation and originally I thought about returning with Blue Horns. Unfortunately everything there was already locked in, so now I’m starting with Horizon BHR instead."

What did you take from your time away — do you think you’ll be back on pace quickly, or do you expect an adjustment period?

Fabian Szyrzik:

"So much! Of course above all, how beautiful it is to bring a small life into the world and become parents. That naturally changes your perspective and what you consider important. You suddenly realise what really matters in life. Simracing is ‘just’ a hobby for me, but especially formula racing — which is where my passion lies — is something I’ve missed. I’m probably lacking the very last little bit right now, but that wouldn’t be a big deal. You simply have less time than before, but I think we’ll groove into it well."

And finally: What would make this a “successful” comeback season for you personally — regardless of final results?

Fabian Szyrzik:

"To race as many events as possible and keep the motivation in the team high. And of course to be able to fight for top 3 positions. The rest will follow 🙂"

With Wiegels returning as team principal and Szyrzik making his comeback, Horizon are heading into 2026 with a mix of structure, experience, and fresh motivation. The direction is clear: be in the fight at the front, find their rhythm quickly — and ideally become regular contenders for the top positions. How fast the new package comes together on track will become clear in the opening races, but the starting point certainly promises plenty of excitement.
